One way that the government can help the economy is to create jobs. It doesn’t necessarily matter what these people do; the important thing is that they collect and spend paychecks. Therefore, if the government hires additional people for airport security, that spending benefits the economy. It is also good if the work has some long-term benefits, like rebuilding our infrastructure, but that is a side benefit. According to John Maynard Keynes, the money could be spent hiring people to dig holes and then fill them in again. The spending would still impact the economy positively.
Keynes, according to Wikipedia, is “widely considered to be the father of modern macroeconomics.”
