Hard to find a career job in vancouver…?

Question by Tim H: Hard to find a career job in vancouver…?
I’ve graduated for a year now and I am finding it difficult to land a good career job in Vancouver Canada. I have a bachelor degree in Forest resource management, which i find is quite useless in finding jobs. It is also true for art degree graduates and certain science graduates as well. I am specifically looking for jobs in the business field but with my degree and lack of experience as a new graduate, i am finding it stressful to find jobs. I am even thinking of moving back to Taiwan to find a job there. Right now, I’ve worked three months at mcdonalds as a cashier and now i am working at a paint store as a sales associate (i am finding the jobs to be unfulfilling). I’d like to find a job that will have great advancement opportunities. To the new graduates, how is the job search so far and how is it finding your first job???

It’s very hard to find a job right now, though Canada’s unemployment rate is 1.7 points less than that in the US.

Reportedly, there are jobs east of you in Alberta but I suspect they’re not career path ones: http://jobbingo.blogspot.com/2011/06/move-north-jobs-on-prairies.html

Most jobs, you’ll find, are not fulfilling despite the sunshine job authors push.

Your chosen field is a tad esoteric. Hopefully you’re networking (LinkedIn, for example) with people in the government in that field, private industry, the national association, the magazine site.

Unless you can show the business employer that your lack of degree doesn’t matter because you have the training/skills to help them, you may be starting in the subbasement. Unless you want to go into sales.

Do I really have to goto college to be successful?

Question by illuminatioN: Do I really have to goto college to be successful?
i don’t believe college is for eveybody, nor do i believe college is the only path to success and good careers. isn’t it true most millionairies are college dropouts or never-goers? anyway, in this economy, i think more ppl are going against univerisites straight out of high school. i just graduated. so what are better alternatives? or should i just get a job? (i got an opportunity at a local airport)…

I’m not saying it’s the only way, but college is the way to go to attain better jobs in life. When employers hire a person they look for more than a high school diploma/GED. If it’s you and another person coming in for an interview, and they have a bachelor’s, they’re most likely going to hire that college graduate? Why? Simply because they’re more educated. You say you got a job at an airport? What are you doing there? I could elaborate if you told me that. You’re right, college isn’t for everyone, but you should at least take a few basic courses to see if you can do it or not. Just because some people are millionaires without college degrees doesn’t mean they didn’t have to work their butts off to get where they are today.
